Story Behind the Painting

Sundrunk Blooms is another interpretation of Pyrostegia Venusta, better known in Venezuela as the Flor de San Juan.

While After the Rain celebrates the flower as part of a landscape and a memory, this painting invites you to step closer. I wanted to slow everything down and focus on the details that often go unnoticed, the curves of each petal, the movement of the stems and the way sunlight transforms their colors.

Living away from Venezuela has changed the way I see the places and plants I grew up with. Distance has taught me to appreciate the smallest details and painting them has become my way of staying connected to home.

I don’t paint these flowers as they appear in nature. I paint how I remember them and how they make me feel. Through bold colors expressive brushstrokes and layered textures I reinterpret them through my own experience as a Venezuelan living abroad.

This painting is a reminder that sometimes all it takes is looking a little closer to discover something entirely new.
